Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment for teens and adults that straightens your teeth and improves your jaw alignment with a series of removable aligners. Your aligners are made from smooth, flexible plastic, and are modeled after an impression of your smile, so they fit snugly on your teeth.

You wear your Invisalign aligners as often as possible, but no less than 20 hours per day. Because your aligners are removable, you can take them out whenever you need to eat, drink, brush, or floss, and put them right back in after. This convenience saves you the hassle of having to change your diet and learn new techniques to keep your teeth clean during treatment.

Your aligners come in a large set that progressively moves your teeth closer to your target alignment. You switch out your aligners every two weeks until you’ve progressed through your entire set, which takes between 12 and 18 months on average.

Once you’ve finished your entire series of aligners, your smile will be perfectly aligned, healthier, and more attractive. Most patients wear a retainer for some time after to maintain their results.

What conditions does Invisalign treat?

Invisalign treats many of the same orthodontic issues as braces, like:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Widely spaced teeth

Invisalign can also treat malocclusions, or issues with your bite, like:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite

Many patients also use Invisalign for more cosmetic purposes, like generally straightening their teeth to improve the appearance of their smile.

How does Invisalign work?

When Dr. Gottam takes the impression of your mouth, she uses it to create a virtual model of your smile. The model is used to map out the necessary steps your teeth need to take in their journey toward perfect alignment.

Each set of aligners in your series represents one incremental step, and is designed to exert gentle and constant pressure on your teeth that gradually pushed them into alignment. This is the same basic principle that braces work on, but Invisalign just accomplishes the task with comfortable plastic aligners instead of metal wires and brackets.
